From April 1977 until just before his death on 13th November 1985, Donald shared the accompaniment of the 11:00am morning services at All Saints’ church, Eastbourne, almost always playing the piano. His last such appearance was at the morning service on 3rd November.
His inspired interpretation of the congregational hymns was a deep well of joy and inspiration. His participation also left us with a lasting record of his remarkable ministry in the form of his tiny offertory pieces, usually a single-line piano (or occasionally organ) descant, and a few very short organ-and-piano duets for the offertory, catalogued under the title “One-liners”.
For the major festivals, he would often compose a duet for organ and piano, and these are among his most remarkable works. Although none is of great length, each is beautifully crafted, harmonically fresh, and universally accessible.
He also arranged a number of movements from Handel’s “Messiah” as organ/piano duets.
